Landmark

Sunglow Ridge

Rising from the central Drakelands, Sunglow Ridge is a rare place where beauty cuts through the harshness of dragonkin territory. Each evening the cliffs catch the sinking light, their stone igniting in waves of gold and amber until the horizon glows like fire. From this height, one can see the Hidden Valley and the broken ruins of Magmore, the last traces of the fallen Gnommers, now half-swallowed by time and shadow.

But the ridge lies deep within contested skies, where dragonkin circle and rival clans clash for dominance. To stand here is to court danger, yet many risk it for the view, where wonder and ruin meet in one breath. The ridge is both beacon and warning, a reminder that even in the heart of peril, Skyland’s beauty endures.

“I thought it was the sun painting the ridge. Then the light shifted, and I realized it was fire dancing on a wyvern’s scales.”

The Identity

For Sunglow Ridge, we wanted to capture a land that feels alive with color yet dangerous in its silence. By lore, this region is where autumn never ends, its trees locked in shades of orange, red, and deep pinks during spring. From the start, the goal was to present a sweeping wide view, a place where the Drakelands open into a breathtaking but perilous sight. Sunglow is famed in Skyland as the ridge where sunsets bathe the mountains in radiant light, one of the most awe-inspiring vantage points in the world.

The Mood

The mood of the piece developed as we added details that shifted the ridge from simply beautiful to untamed. Ether spores float in the air, drifting sparks that hint at the life and danger within. At a distance, dragonkin silhouettes cut across the skies, reminding viewers that this land is not just serene but also wild and contested. It needed to feel gorgeous but unsettled, a place that pulls you in while warning you to keep your distance.

The Essence

To give the ridge depth, we layered it with multiple levels instead of flat terrain. Broken cliffs, caves, rivers, and waterfalls formed natural havens for dragonkin and remnants of the Gnommer civilization that once stood here before the great catastrophe. By combining lush autumn forests with scattered ruins and hidden threats, Sunglow Ridge became more than a landscape, but a living backdrop for Skyland’s stories.
