Dragonkin
Chasm Drake
Chasm Drakes are among the five largest wingless dragonkin in Skyland, their hulking bodies adapted to the crushing pressure of deep caves. Their bioluminescent throats lure prey like sprays of light, drawing creatures close before the jaws snap shut. At times, they remain motionless, blending with cavern stone until an unsuspecting victim wanders into their gaping maw. They also feed on minerals and crystal veins, allowing them to grow jagged reinforced scales by ether, capable of resisting most elements and afflictions, making them living tanks.
Their thuriums are immense, built for Aeras manipulation. By inflating their massive jaws, they unleash concussive roars that echo through stone, deafening everything within range and splitting cavern walls apart. Despite their bulk, they are unnervingly agile, guided by multiple sensory pits and glowing eyes that let them navigate absolute darkness and even plunge into the deepest flooded chasms.
“Aye, I thought I was just walking deeper into the cave, damp walls, air thick as a swamp. Then the stone ahead gave off a glow, faint at first, like crystals waking. Took me a blink too long to see it. The ground rumbled, and the light spread wide, and that’s when I knew. I wasn’t in no cave. I was standing in its bloody jaws.”
The Identity
When shaping the Chasm Drake, we set out to move beyond the expected drake tropes and build something that felt fresh but still recognizable as a kin of the great beasts. Our inspirations came from the gulper eel’s cavernous jaws and the rugged anatomy of bearded dragons, combining deep-sea horror with terrestrial weight. The result was a hulking dragonkin whose mouth is more like a cave entrance, a vast pouch capable of swelling before releasing a roar that shatters stone and ruptures the senses. Its design had to evoke both the crushing silence of the earth’s depths and the sudden violence of a subterranean predator erupting from the dark.

The Mood
To capture its presence, we envisioned the Drake framed within the throat of a cave, its massive body blocking out the light as it leaned forward in a roar. From the start, the focus was not only on size, but on the suffocating atmosphere of being trapped underground with a predator that can both stun and crush. We explored angles that exaggerated the enormity of its jaws and the way sound itself seemed to ripple through the cavern, while jagged rock framed it like natural fortifications.

The Essence
The finishing touch was the play of glow against darkness. We pushed its bioluminescent traits, fins, whiskers, scales, even the inside of its maw, to create an image both mesmerizing and dreadful. We added also crystals embedded in the environment served not just for beauty but as a reflection of its feeding habits, drawing energy from the very stone.

The balance of faint ether light, scattered dust, and deep shadows gave life to a vision of a predator that moves through caves as if it were water, a titan of the depths cloaked in both beauty and terror.
Final Design
We hope you enjoyed this glimpse into the creation of the Chasm Drake, a beast born from the silence of stone and the roar of the earth itself.
